What are Neuromodulators? Q & A With Dr. Adams
Birmingham Wrinkle Relaxers

Wrinkle Relaxer Options

Wrinkle relaxers, also called neuromodulators, are injectables that temporarily relax wrinkles in the areas they treat. They are based on a purified form of Botulinum Toxin A, which comes from bacterial cultures processed into a protein. This is a safe substance that has been used for many years to treat patients with certain muscular disorders.

Wrinkle relaxers may be injected into the forehead, glabella region (between the eyebrows), and around the eyes to relax the muscles that move the face and cause wrinkles. These treatments achieve a smoother, more youthful appearance, require no recovery period, and last for 3-4 months. Wrinkle relaxer treatments are quick, convenient, and have minimal side effects.

Botox

Approved to treat forehead lines, lines between the brows, and crow’s feet. This popular wrinkle relaxer is a household name and continues to be the “go-to” treatment for millions who want to smooth their skin and reduce or prevent wrinkles. Used precisely, it allows a range of motion while causing only key muscles to relax in order to achieve a natural, more youthful appearance.

Xeomin

This injectable is also approved to treat forehead lines, lines between the brows and crow’s feet. It is a purer substance that does not contain any protein additives when packaged. Because some patients can develop resistance to additives in other wrinkles relaxers such as Botox over time, this cosmetic injectable is ideal for them. However, less precision is achieved with this cosmetic injectable, and it’s thought to not last as long as the others.

Dysport

Approved for treating lines between the eyebrows (glabella) only, and is normally only used for moderate to severe cases. This injectable requires more units of cosmetic injectable than other wrinkle relaxers do and is a more diluted substance. Because of this factor, Dysport spreads more quickly and is effective faster than other injectables. This factor also allows more range of motion.

Jeuveau

Approved to treat moderate to severe lines between the eyebrows only. This injectable is the most similar to Botox, and it works as an ideal alternative for those patients who have developed a resistance to their usual wrinkle relaxer. Results from Jeuveau injectables have been shown to appear more quickly, and they may last longer as well, according to recent studies.

What to Expect from Cosmetic Injectables at Rousso Adams Facial Plastic Surgery Clinic

Receiving cosmetic injectables only takes a few minutes, and anesthesia or downtime isn’t needed. Injections are virtually painless since they’re performed with a very fine needle. Results are generally visible within two to ten days. To reduce the possibility of bruising or swelling, patients should avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours, and intake of aspirin/anti-inflammatory medications should cease for two weeks prior to treatment. The treated area should not be manipulated for two hours after injections, and an upright position should be maintained.

Patients interested in BOTOX and cosmetic injectables should discuss their aesthetic goals thoroughly with Dr. Rousso or Dr. Adams during their initial consultation so the doctors can recommend the correct treatment for their unique situations.
