While certain flaws like fine lines and wrinkles can occur with aging, a disproportionately small chin is normally caused by genetics. A person with a small chin may feel their jawline lacks definition or proportion in comparison to the rest of the face.
A chin augmentation can enhance the size and profile of the chin to produce a more balanced and attractive appearance.
What Does Chin Augmentation Treat?
The goal of chin augmentation is a restoration of facial harmony. The procedure can be used to define an underdeveloped chin or give it more prominence, correct a recessed or weak chin, help reduce the appearance of a full or “double chin” caused by a small chin bone, and improve definition of the neck and jawline. The chin is related to nose size, so a small chin may make a large nose appear more noticeable.
Ideal candidates for chin augmentation typically have a noticeably small chin or an underdeveloped and asymmetrical jawline.
How Does Chin Augmentation Work?
Chin augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis using MAC anesthesia (Monitored Anesthesia Care) Twilight Sedation or local anesthesia with sedation and can take about 30 minutes to perform, depending on the amount of correction needed and the patient’s personal and aesthetic needs. Chin implants are customized for each person.
Chin Augmentation Before & After Photos
During your procedure, a small incision will be made either under the chin or inside the mouth to create a pocket for the chin implant. The pouch is typically made in the front of the chin bone where the implant will be placed and repositioned. After the implant has been placed, the surgeon will close the incision with sutures. In instances where an implant is not needed, an incision will be placed in the jawbone to allow your surgeon to move the chin or jaw forward.
Recovery
Following your chin augmentation, a compression garment will be placed along the treated area to protect your new contours and reduce swelling. You may experience minor to moderate discomfort and may be given medication or a cold compress to help minimize pain.
Swelling and bruising will occur but will subside after a few weeks. A diet consisting of liquids and soft foods may be recommended for the first few days after your procedure.
You will need to keep your head elevated to prevent putting any stress on your chin while resting. You should be able to return to work and resume your normal activities two to three weeks after surgery.
Results
Your chin implants will feel very similar to a natural chin bone and your enhanced appearance will look natural. The final results of your chin augmentation procedure will be apparent within several months of surgery.
